GEN Group Strategy 2024–2030

The GEN Group is building its future on three key pillars that shape a reliable, low-carbon and technologically advanced electricity system.

The first pillar represents reliable low-carbon electricity generation, which remains the foundation of stable system operation and secure supply for users. This pillar underpins our commitment to sustainable, environmentally friendly and predictable generation.

The second and third pillars are strongly investment-oriented. Investments in nuclear technologies form the basis of long-term energy stability, enabling the development of safe, advanced and competitive sources that will reliably meet the needs of future generations. At the same time, through investments in renewable energy sources and flexibility solutions, we expand distributed generation, improve power system adaptability and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future.

Reliable Low-Carbon Electricity Generation

The first strategic pillar is based on the safe and reliable operation of all generation units and continuous optimisation of their efficiency and system services. By leveraging synergies within the Group, we strengthen competitiveness, reduce costs and increase operational reliability. Particular attention is devoted to cybersecurity and the resilience of generation systems. Through efficient sales of domestic generation and optimisation of cash flows, we ensure a stable investment potential for the further development of the Group.

Investments in Nuclear Technologies

The second pillar focuses on the development of nuclear energy as a key foundation of long-term energy stability. Priority is given to preparing all professional, technical and regulatory bases for a decision on investment in JEK2, as well as to the systematic assessment of the potential application of small modular reactors (SMRs) in Slovenia. Through these activities, we strengthen self-sufficiency, reduce exposure to price volatility and build a reliable pathway towards a low-carbon future.

Investments in Renewable Energy Sources and Flexibility

Through the third pillar, the GEN Group accelerates the transition to a distributed, flexible and low-carbon electricity system. With planned investments, it expands generation capacities from renewable energy sources – solar, hydropower and wind – and develops flexibility solutions such as energy storage systems, pumped-storage hydropower plants and other advanced technologies. Particular attention is also devoted to establishing a strategic reserve at the Brestanica Thermal Power Plant site and to the development of green hydrogen pilot projects, where the introduction of power-to-gas (P2G) and process systems enables new pathways for energy storage and integration into the electricity system.

JEK2 Project

Together with renewable energy sources, the JEK2 project represents a cornerstone for achieving the goals of climate neutrality and decarbonisation of Slovenia’s electricity generation system.
